He wants to train it in shutzhund.... I'm not exatcly sure how I feel about it... The puppy is about 5 months old.. .and has an excellent temperament, I don't want that to change. He says shutzhund improves the dogs behavior, and makes it listen better.... I just don't want him to become mean... there are certain parts in shutzhund that make me worry....if you've had experience with it... and can enlighten me... and lift my worry I'd appreciate it.

Bozema- He is a hand full, but also a very quick learner, we understand the importance of training (especially with a presa, we also have a Beauceron) Thank you for the info... I just don't want him to think it's okay to do some of the things that they train them to do, unless told to... (which comes with training) He's an amazing dog... sometimes to smart for his own good.... We are working on the back talk that he sometimes gives... :-)

Shutzhund is not a sport that will make a dog mean if trained properly. A properly trained Shcutzhund dog is less likely to bite than the average dog. A dog should only be trained in Shutzhund if it has a stable temperment. Be careful who you train him with. This is not something you should train on your own. Go to the trainer and ask how they evaluate if they will accept a dog to train, if the answer doesn't involve tempertment testing in some way run the other way and find someone else.

you own a dog breed that can become agressive if not trained properly to begin with . I would go with him and make sure that the trainer starts with a temperament test and if he or she fails then I would not go any further with the training . I think that you and he should train the dog to do what you want it to do and listen only to the two of you . I dont believe in other people training your dogs . You two should be training this dog from the time you got this dog . basic commands could and should probably best be handled by you . Remember these are strong dogs that need a strong and loving and a consistent hand . good luck and god bless.

The fact that you live with the dog in question and are questioning training the dog in this speaks volumes. I have seen what can happen to a good dog who goes through this training.
He was a bouvier des Flanders who was a great family type dog. The husband took him through this training. After the training he became a little unpredictable in new situtations. He ended up attacking and killing a smaller dog at the dog park. All the little dog did was run up to the owner of the Bouvier. As you can see a "little" unpredictable when your dog has been taught to bite and attack takes on whole new meaning.
If you have doubts, I would seriously try to talk your b/f out of it and try to turn him on to something considerably more desireable. Search and rescue groups are always looking for good dogs. This training is highly beneficial and rarely if ever sparks a dogs agressive nature.
On a side note. With a breed as noted as your for viciousness, I would do everything in my power to prove how sweet and gentle they are when raised correctly with love.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://tr.im/q7CMV
A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

As long as he is fully committed to schutzhund and all aspects of it - including obedience - I would prefer he do this rather than not train the dog at all. Presa canarios need obedience training and strong guidance from owners - they are not an easy dog to own. If the dog is trained properly and consistently, schutzhund won't change his temperament. But your boyfriend needs to stick with it and continue to train the dog all the time and throughout its life. It's a big commitment of time and a big responsibility to both own a presa canario and to own a schutzhund dog.

I have found this site to be very helpful. In Schutzhund obedience is key however the way clubs do it it becomes a game for the dog. Get involved with a Schutzhund club in your area and find out from them what the sport entails.

Find a good trainer - trainers need not be expensive, but find a person who knows dogs, strong breed dogs and is willing to work with them. Get into classes - they benefit you probably more so than the dog!

Your dog, your type of training.
If you like your dog the way he is, then keep it that way. Tell your boyfriend that the pup listens well enough and has a good behavior.
