The staff present during surgery depends on the extent and and nature of the surgery. The more invasive and extensive the surgery, the more staff around will be required.

Usual setting includes:
>>the surgeon -does the main surger
>>surgeon's assistants - other doctor's who will assist the surgeon.
>>scrub nurse - mainly responsible in passing intruments to the surgeon.
>>circulating nurse - standing by beside to check and provide the things needed for surgery and does. May perform other tasks as required by the staffs directly involved in surgical processes (for example adjusting the masks or gowns, wiping out the excessive sweating on the foreheads, etc. May also take charge of instruments and sponge counts .A tally board may be used to count those things used on the operation table.
>>Anesthesiologist - takes care of the sedation and in charge of the hemodynamic monitoring of the patient.
>>Anesthetist - may be present in place of anesthesiologist.
>>Operating Room Technician - may prepare the patient for surgery. May also assist in surgery in place of the scrub nurse and pass instruments to the surgeon.May also do jobs in place of circulating nurse.
>>in cases of Cesarean Section, a Pediatrician and Midwife are also present in addition to the obstetrician who does the operation.
>>a Medical Technologist may be called out as the need arises.

Well, the entire number of surgical team members varies as I mentioned depending on the case operated on. (Long ago, I remembered assisting an operation a patient with appendicitis - it was just 4 of us in that surgery- the surgeon, the anesthesiologist, ME as as the scrub nurse, and another nurse circulating.)

You have the surgical tech. staff that helps by making sure the instruments are sterilized, counts & hands the instruments to the Dr., counts the instruments afterwards, etc. There are probably different types of nurses also.
