I heard that if 16 year olds are having a main meal in a pub or restaurant they are allowed to be served alcohol at the landlords discretion. Is this true or just a silly myth?

OK, I've read the other answers.....jeez lol. Mayor Adam West was close though!
16 and 17 year olds are allowed to drink beer (ie ale or lager), cider or wine (not spirits or alcopops) with a "table meal", provided that an adult purchases the drink. An adult must also accompany the 16/17 year old at the table. Bar snacks do not count as a meal.
The law is worded like this to allow for 16/17 year olds to drink alcohol at, say, a family meal, and to keep within responsible drinking guidelines. It also means there is no loophole as there used to be, where a 16 year old could order one portion of chips and keep drinking til they were finished! Bear in mind too that the drink must still be purchased by an adult, anyone under 18 is strictly prohibited from buying alcohol in the UK.

The minimum age for the purchase of alcohol is 18. People aged 16 or 17 may consume wine, beer or cider on licensed premises (pubs/bars/restaurants) with a table meal. In England and Wales, it must be an adult who orders,[66] however an adult doesn't have to be present to order alcohol with a meal in Scotland. The legal age for the purchase of alcohol from an off-licence (store/supermarket) is 18. (The legal age to buy liqueur chocolates is 16. but this is rarely enforced.)

Yes, in the UK it is legal for a 16 to have a low alcohol content drink like a shandy while having dinner. In the US it is legal in most areas for underage people to drink in public as long as they are accompanies by their legal guardian.

I have spent my spare time over the last few years research all things alcohol related. I amazes me some of the misconceptions people have about it.

Illegal is illegal. If the landlord is serving alcohol to a minor, he or she can get into some deep doo-doo.
