There was a crosswalk right at the stop sign, so I stopped right BEFORE that. However, there were so many cars parking right/left side illigally, too close to the corner so I couldn't see whether cars are coming or not since I am stopping too far behind from the point I can check and see. Do I still need to stop behind the crosswalk and gradually start off slowly and see or I can just stop right on crosswalk so I can see whether cars are coming. Thanks.

I will start by saying that some driving test cops are extremely picky and this may indeed be one of those "danged if you do, danged if you don't situations".

But what I would do is stop behind the crosswalk first, to allow any people crossing to cross. Look way up the street both ways and around the corners if you can for any approaching pedestrians BEFORE you ease up, because the officer will count off if you end up stopping again and blocking the crosswalk if there's someone who needs to cross. Look as good as you can for approaching cars, and then ease forward and look again as you get up close to the corner. Hopefully there won't be anyone right behind you that may rearend you if you have to stop again. If you get to the corner and obviously it is still completely clear, you don't have to stop again, but if you see that there are cars you couldn't see before, of course you should stop again. Just cross your fingers that you don't end up blocking the crosswalk too long.
And don't forget to put your blinker on if you are making a turn at the intersection.

Good luck!
