They always tell you that before a surgery.....
If you are having the laser surgery, you will be out in no time.
I had surgery around 7am and was home by noon! They kept me long enough to get my gag reflex back and then sent me home.....
You will be sore.....and you will sleep, a lot.....you will have trouble turning over in bed, because your stomach muscles will be so sore....I had great medication that kept me asleep most of the time....I'd wake up to eat, and take more medicine, and then go back to bed....In about a week you should feel fine....
Your bathroom habits are going to change tho....I had a lot of trouble with that after my surgery.....
Remember, your gall bladder is a storage tank type thing for stomach acid, without it, acid is just constantly dumped into your stomach, so you may take more TUMS and things like that than before.....
Good luck with your surgery, I wouldn't worry about the smoking, just try to cut back as best as you can, and don't smoke right before

The gallbladder is removed when you have gallstones or inflammation (swelling) in your gallbladder. In most cases a laparoscopic cholecystectomy is done to remove the gallbladder rather than open surgery. The laparoscopic method is done through tiny cuts with small tools and a scope placed through your belly button. If you have too much infection, scarring, or cancer, you may need open surgery. Try to rest afterward and find people to help you with your day-to-day duties while you recover. Follow your health care provider's instructions about not smoking before and after the procedure. Smokers heal more slowly after surgery. They are also more likely to have breathing problems during surgery. For this reason, if you are a smoker,it is best to quit before surgery. Also, your wounds will heal much better if you do not smoke after the surgery.

The anesthesiologist will probably talk about this with you and it may affect whether or how they put you to sleep during the surgery.
There is always a risk of pneumonia after any surgery/ anesthesia and they will probably have you doing breathing exercises into this little tube with a ball in it.
The procedure is simple, especially if they do the little laparoscopy cuts instead of a major one.
One thing that noone told me about before I had mine out, is that certain foods may cause problems (diarrhea, nausea, etc) after the surgery. For example, fried food and ice cream are problems for me now. This makes sense because of what the gall bladder does, but I wish I had known and I could have avoided some discomfort.

Why are you having your gallbladder taken out so early? Do you have stones? This is an awful young age. Are you over weight? It is a simple procedure now days . I had it done about two years ago. They made five small cuts in the abdomen. It will hurt for awhile and you can't lift or drive for two weeks. Mine hurt pretty bad for two weeks but my sister-law hurt for abut three days and it didn't bother her anymore . Just do what your doctors tell you and take it easy . It is a major surgery and you don't want to tear anything lose but you'll do just fine. The cough will probably drive you crazy though and will probably hurt alittle .I'm 44.

I had the surgery about 5 yrs ago. I have never smoked, but I had no problems with the surgery. If you have smoker's cough at the age of 17, I am glad you are quitting. You will be much healthier for much longer.

Any smoking increases your anesthesia risks because of the impaired oxygen transport to your lungs. That is why they ask these questions and why they recommend you stop so that you lower any risks that are within your control. Do NOT smoke today - you can quit. Good luck on your surgery.

GB surgery is a piece of cake. I was at a picnic two days after I had mine out. The smoking thing-- they just want your oxygen levels to be at their best before surgery. Nothing to worry about!

Don't smoke the night before, i had mine out when i was 42, & it was nothing, i have had 4 other operations & this was a piece of cake. they even let me eat solid food that afternoon & home the next day & felt SOOOO much better immediately after the operation.
dont' worry, you will be fine & have little or no scarring if they are doing it with laparascope, pulled mine out thru belly button but you'd never even know it.
