Because so many christians have told me "god is real".
Reality is testable and quanifiable. Yet when asked for evidence that can be tested, said christian always reverts to the old cop out of "but you have to have faith!".
Not only is that worn and pathetic, but proves conclusively that they have NO evidence to support the existence of thier magic sky pixie.
So, please, unless you're willing to provide ONE single shred of credible (remember that word, it's important) evidence to support the existence of your imaginary friend, I suggest you stop referring to it as "real".

But they have to say it. Otherwise they would have to stop believing because there is no proof.

As a desperate act they try to flip rationality on it's head and insist that the only way that they will stop beveling is if they are shown an absolute proof of the non-existence of god.

And even then only maybe.

I think the problem everyone has here is that we all try to compare science to religion. Yes, both represent a way of thinking, but it comes out to being like apples and oranges: both are fruit, but they are completely different. For science and religion, the big difference is in the way they are validated.

Science's way of validating it's facts and belief falls upon the concept of mathematical logic, arrived at through observation. If you do A to item B, the result is C. Science builds off of itself continually, and boils down to being a large collection of accepted theories and a few believed constants.

Religion, on the other hand, validates itself based on emotional logic, also arrived at through observation of the world around them. Gods likely started when early humans began observing things around them that were inexplicable to them, and thus came to the only reasonable conclusion of the time: that someone bigger than them, more powerful than them was acting on the world around them.

The Judeo-Christian God that is likely being discussed here has become a being very close to the hearts of believers. Many of those who truly believe in God will tell you they can feel him there. They will tell you that they can see God in all the workings of the world. They can see their own form of cause and effect in the world, based upon the concepts of punishment, redemption, and a divine plan.

They see bad things happening to those who have wronged others, and good to those who have done right by God, and see it as evidence of God. To many, there is no such thing as "luck", only what is planned for you. In the eyes of believers, the evidence is all around us, staring us in the eye, with all the proof they need.

Both ideas have their own proof, and their own evidence. Both are ways to explain the happenings of the natural world. Neither is guaranteed to be the truth, both change, and both are debated within their believers daily. One can believe in either with confidence if they believe the evidence. One can even believe in both, as they are not incompatible.

However, one cannot compare the two wholly, as they are so fundamentally different.

Apples and oranges my friends, apples and oranges.

An edit:

To those who mention the apparent need to disprove God's existence through science, you are attempting the impossible. In the end, there is no way to show that there is no possible way for God to exist.

Dear Mr. C.A.
You are right in that too many refer to faith in order to accept God's existence.
That is ashame.
However, what proof would need to be supplied, so that you accept the idea?
If I showed God to you, would you believe its Him?
If He did some fancy tricks, would you believe?
If you would, I've no respect for you!
So, again, what proof would it take?
One thing that separates man from the beasts is his power of reason.
Why not use that?
The Bible, at Hebrews 3:4 states:
"Of course, every house is constructed by someone, but he that constructed all things is God."
Please note the "of course....." as if its a given.
Wouldn't your reasoning powers lead you to see as obvious that things don't get into existence on their own?

Faith is believing in man.

man wrote the book, man invented the traditions. faith = believing in man.

Many christian think Jesus is like Peter Pan. If they really really believe it will be true.

The sad truth is that in a court of law (based on the evidence) I can prove Santa is just as real as the god in the bible. There are also millions of believers in Santa; they just don't kill in the name of their belief. They leave cookies out and pray for presents.

You do the exact same thing with 'toe', but not only that you insist that it be taught as fact in school, but when you are faced with the job of providing some evidence you fail as well. But if it really offends you that we KNOW that God is real, think of how offended you will be when you are bowing before his thrown and confessing that he is Lord? boy want you poop a blue streak on that day.

It's nice that you have your opinion but you shouldn't step all over someone else's. I don't go to church and fully believe in science and evolution. But I also believe in a higher power because those kinds of beliefs gives us purpose to be here. If not, then we really are just organisms trying to survive in the universe with no real purpose or aspirations. So voice your opinion but can you have a little more tact?

no, religions teaches you their faith.
You have no excuse that YHWH does not exist, nature proves His existence. But, you can believe what you want. Its called free will.

what would be quantifiable evidence ? Some people look for different things as proof positive evidence...

What would YOU consider as evidence that God exists.
Tell me that... and I will see what I can do... fair enough?

Edit: Ok I see 3 of you dont think thats a fair deal... :-D
