He painted in a series in order to examine how one's perception of light falling on a certain object (be it a haystack, or Rouen Cathedral) changed according to the time of day, season of the year, and weather conditions.
One of the most famous portrait artist of the late 19th century was Edouard Manet. See his portrait of Emile Zola http://www.abcgallery.com/M/manet/manet15.html
Monet during a visit to England in the early 1870s was inspired by the atmospheric paintings of Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) which are now seen as the forerunners of Impressionism.

Many impressionists paint series as the changing light changes the subject and you can paint a new painting.

The best portrait painter in those days (and maybe even ours) I'd say was Ilya Efimovich Repin. Maybe not in France but his work is famed today:

Who told him to try Impressionism? Nobody.
He was a founder of French impressionist painting. The term Impressionism is derived from the title of his painting "Impression, Sunrise. "

Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Frédéric Bazille, and Alfred Sisley. Together they shared new approaches to art, painting the effects of light en plein air with broken color and rapid brushstrokes, in what later came to be known as Impressionism.
