There are other pros besides serving your country. You can get career related training and money for college and grad school. Resume maker. Travel opportunities. I have been to Germany, France, Kuwait, and most and longest of all Iraq.

The cons are waking up early on weekends. Having to be proactive about your career and training as a junior enlisted.

Overall , I joined up as an 18 year old in early 2001. Though the role as a guardsman has changed and I have moved along different units. I still enjoy it almost 7 years later.

The National Gaurd has great signing bonuses. They also have all the other military benefits, like the GI Bill, insurance and training that is unmatched. I know alot of people who joined to get a jump on their career. One person became an MP, and then joined the Police Force. One person became a Health Care Specialist, and works as an EMT while she is getting her nursing degree (which her GI Bill is paying for). People have done it for a variety of reasons. Some want to serve, but not commit their entire life, leave the city they love.

But you do risk getting deployed, and nowadays National Guard is more likely to be deployed than Active duty.

It's the best thing I've done in my life (except marry my wife).

I have neve felt more like I was fulfilling the purpose I was born for than when I've been helping people as a Guard Soldier.

OKC Tornado 1998--Guard Duty
OEF 2 --Task Force Phoenix II ANA Training
Hurricanes Katrina/Rita 2005
OEF 5 --Task Force Phoenix V ANA Training

In addition, I can attribute every financial and professional success I have had to my Guard experinece and training.

I get to pay back, in a small way, the debt I owe my community and my country for the opportunites I have here.

nat'l guard and army reserves have about the same opportunities. the only real difference is if you want to switch between guard and active then it tends to be somewhat of a chore (depending on your unit). and the other major difference is if you want to go to a college out of state then the guard WILL NOT pay, you have to go to an in state school corresponding to the state you joined the guard in. this is only really affecting those who want to do some sort of ROTC.

i reccomend you check into all branches and see what the y all have to say then pick the one that best suits your needs.

why join? to serve your country! serving your country is privilege, not everyone can do it know what i mean? you can build a retirement up by doing the guard, i'm in the navy and when i leave, i'm going to go guard if they let me (i've been in 18 years.).
