Yes, the Playstation 3 is capable of upscaling DVD movies to 720p, 1080i, or 1080p, depending on your TV set resolution. It's of course, not going to be true HD, but the picture will be much smoother than 480p.
Update for tony c: You won't find any scripting from Sony on their system update website since they announce their features at each update but not for previous updates (2.01 is now up). Upscaling was available with firmware version 1.80, which can be referenced via Wikipedia. However, the manual, which I will link, states that upscaling is available, regarless if PAL or NTSC since it is a feature that affects all PS3's.

Update for tony c: The question that the original poster asked, was "Does the PS3 upscale DVDs to 1080p?" The answer to that question is, yes it is capable of it. I fail to see how your response answers the original poster's question, since you state "the ps3 does not upscale DVD movies it is not an upscaler", and "an upscaler is imminent but as things stand now the machine cannot upscale standard DVD's" when both of those statements are false since it can upscale, and the firmware has be available since May of 2007.

What you will see is the absolute best quality that DVD can muster, and it is pretty darned good. It's enough to keep you from having to replace your entire collection right away, but you will still look forward to getting the Blu-Ray release of your favorite films. It will be a staggering difference from what you are used to seeing on a tube television, but the Bluray will be a staggering difference from that point. That fancy TV will not feel like a waste, and that's the point of upscaling. Some players are better than others at the task, though, so choose carefully. I have found my PS3 does a wonderful job of it. I'm a Sony hater at heart, but this is a shockingly good piece of gear, and worth every penny they charge for it. They don't even advertise half of what it does. It's the worst love/hate relationship I've ever had to deal with. There is far more than just resolution, as you suggest. Color depth, dynamic contrast, bitrates, audio, all manner of things. Blu is just better. Upscaling those DVDs, though, is very impressive. I still get a kick out of running a DVD on a tube in one room, and then taking it to the 50 inch plasma and PS3 in the other room. It still blows my mind. When I pop in the Blu-Ray version, however, my mind is even more blown.

the ps3 does not upscale DVD movies it is not an upscaler-it is a true blu-ray player (two different machines) and will output video to a resolution of 1080p (this includes gameplay) provided the blu-ray DVD carries the requisite amount of data. the ps3 will play standard DVD's but only to standard definition. so the guy at the top with the thumbs down is actually correct-please feel free to log in to the sony ps3 website which will tell you all you need to know about ps3............to the answerer below sony confirms that an upscaler is imminent but as things stand now the machine cannot upscale standard DVD's-direct me to a link where it states the ps3 is an upscaler and i will accept i am wrong-nowhere in the ps3 marketing franchise does it state the machine upscales DVD's for one reason-it doesn't. if it did sony would milk it for it's worth-it would be another feather in the ps3's cap against the x-box elite etc-get your own facts right before you criticise others. having said this i can only speak for the pal version. living in the UK i have no idea nor am i interested in the NTSC models specifications. i will visit this thread in anticipation of link that states categorically that the ps3 upscales standard def DVD's (and it has to be sony sanctioned after all they built the machine so they know-not just some "experts opinion") that proves me wrong. you have come into this thread calling me a liar with your abusive language-so put up some substance for your argument or shut up...thankyou marcius-you have confirmed my argument in saying a firmware is availiable for the ps3 for the purpose of upscaling DVD's-but without this the machine will not upscale DVD movies (i did say the upscaler was imminent). but upscaling does not come as part of the machines basic package. so the machine is not a native upscaler (please refer to the top of the thread). and this was my argument-once again thankyou for responding.

I really don't believe so. DVDs are limited to a certain resolution. Which is why HD-DVD and Blu-Ray formates were created.
