My uncle who has been in the hospital now since thursday for double pnemonia. First his liver shut down, and now apparently his kidneys are going as well. His bp has gone up though. Yesterday he was taken off his sedation medication but he still hasn't woken up. They are saying it's going to take a miracle but I refuse to believe this. Is there no chance at all for him? They are checking for brain I feel so guilty right now because I conributed to his alcohol use (he would ask me for money all the time). I cut him off though a week before he ended up in the hospital and I'm starting to think he did something to himself to end up here. We just now found out that he was suppose to go to court a few days ago for stealing beer but he never told us about this. We think he was too afraid too. He helped me out with so many things in life...he wasn't just some bum alcoholic. How can I feel better about this? I've never lost anyone before and we were so close..he was like the father I never had

well theres a good chance that he won't pull out of this. and they are right he would need a miracle...once those major organs shut down it's not a good sign. Don't feel guilty about contributing to his alcoholism, you loved him and you were trying to help him out, out of love...I understand don't take it upon yourself to suffer due to his addicitions he made this choice for himself....if he does pass he isn't suffering anymore and now his soul can rest at peace!

Sorry to say, but it doesn't sound good. When liver and kidneys start to shut down, it isn't much longer for the rest of the body to shut down too. If liver and kidneys are not working, toxins build in the body which are usually fatal. I am very sorry for what you are going through, but do want to say that your uncle's drinking is his fault-not yours. I don't care if you gave him money because if you didn't, he would have found a way to get alcohol. You mentioned he had stolen beer so he would have done anything. Please do not blame yourself for your uncle's disease. That is probably why he is in the condition that he is in right now. Alcoholism kills. Just spend whatever quality time you can with him in whatever time he has left. I can't stress enough that you are NOT to blame. I have been through living with my ex who had a drinking problem. I tried controlling his drinking and whatever I could to get him to stop. I also bought him alcohol. It was his disease and when I went for help, realized that it wasn't my fault, but he was sick just like people who get other diseases. If he had diabetes or another health condition, would you blame yourself? Just remember your uncle has a disease and it is no one's fault. Prayers and good wishes for you.

I'm so sorry you are having to go through all this....
good people make bad choices in life....you did nothing to cause this..his drinking was his choice...he was going to get his alcohol whether you gave him money or he had to steal it...his drinking effected his body and damaged his liver, possibly beyond repair...your uncle was a wonderful father figure to you and you will remember his love....if he doesn't pull thru this, you will deal with the grief and the loss...cry, remember and learn from his life, but do not blame yourself...

Sorry to say this but it is true. He will not have to suffer any more--from the addiction of alcohol or what ever his reason for drinking was--and there must have been a reason. It is NOT your fault--so don't feel guilty. YOU did what you had to do and hopefully you would make the same decision again. Good Luck.

Sorry to hear about your uncle. Once multiple organ failure starts, its extremely difficult to stabilize someone. It's not impossible to recover, but it almost never happens. A co-worker in my office died from pneumonia and multiple organ failure last year.
You cannot possibly be responsible for his condition - this is a result of the double pneumonia, and it usually takes weeks or even months for pneumonia to progress to this stage. His drinking may have reduced his immunity somewhat, but even extremely healthy people can end up in this situation when they catch pneumonia.

I had a brother who died from alcoholism at the age of 30. He died, when he tried to sober up. There is always room for a miracle, if he pulls through, please help him to be sober from here on out.
