Bill Donahue of the Catholic League is calling for all Catholics to boycott the new film "The Golden Compass" on the grounds that it promotes athiesm and potrays the Roman Catholic Church as "Evil." Donahue admits to not having seen the film but hates it anyway.

Meanwhile, the Church's Council of American Bishops has given the film a thumbs up, calling it "intelligent and well-crafted."

So, is this guy for real? Or is it another "The Purple Teletubby is gay" thing intended to make the Leaugue appear relevant enough to give money to.

Typical. How can you determine that a movie is "bad" if you have never even seen it? Well, we all know he doesn't rely on proof in general. He is just another lemming...

It's a Teletubby with a purse. The best way to get people to join you on your wacky crusade is to be able to get behind something big and make a huge noise. Even if you fail, you've still made a nice place for yourself in the spotlight, and maybe gained some more followers. It's a cheesy fundraising method, but I guess it's a lot easier than actually having to work at something to get money for your group.

I just read in Time Magazine last night that "Pullman has even received warm praise from members of the clergy, including the Archbishop of Canterbury, for his exploration of spiritual issues." (Time Magazine; December 10, 2007; page 87). I imagine the Council of America Bishops which you mentioned are part of the "members of the clergy" cited above.

(The Pullman spoken of, is, of course, Philip Pullman, author of the "His Dark Materials" books, of which "The Golden Compass" is the first. The article is entitled "Sympathy for the Devil" and deals with the fact that the main evil in the books is a church gone horribly awry.)

In my opinion, any time a member of an organized church calls for a boycott of something, it's simply because they want to put their head in the sand and pretend that different issues should not be explored. I remember crossing picket lines and pushing my way through an angry mob when I went to see "The Last Temptation of Christ". The things that offended so many were the images of Jesus living a normal married life with Mary Magdalene, and having "human" thoughts. Do you know what it did for me? It made me realize just how bad the tempations must have been, and just how hard it must have been for Him to refuse to take the bait. It remains to this day one of the most spiritual and faith affirming films I have ever seen. Most of that stems from the Kazantzakis' exploration of the human part of Jesus. It's a good issue for all believers to discuss, in my opinion, as it shows the magnitude of Jesus' sacrifice.

Let Donahue and his ilk boycott the film. Plenty of other people, including faithful Catholics, are going to see it. It's going to be a holiday blockbuster, and while I have yet to read the books (they are going on my Santa wish list), I have a feeling from the things people have told me that they will be taking up permanent residence in the Fantasy Genre Hall of Fame.

Isn't he the guy who put togetherthe boycott of Harry Potter? Wasn't Harry one of the biggest sellers of the year? It seems that the more they boycott these things the more money the filmaker can make. So, go right ahead and organize the boycott. It's only going to drive up the profits form this flick too. The Film makers can't generate this kind of publicity on their own. LOL

Why is promoting atheism worse the promoting fairy tales? Is Bill afraid he may have to get a real job?

Since he hasn't seen it his opinion is null and void. Part of the problem is people refuse to think for themselves and listen to whatever dribble comes their way.
