It's all about appearance! Just ask the bartender slyly that you just want a sprite or coke with ice. Sip on that and just keep the drink in your hand. People will think it's a mixed drink. It's not about getting drunk all the time, it's about being out and being social. The setting is a bar so just have a drink in your hand and you'll fit right in! And if you want to drink, just get suggestions from the bartender on something that isn't very strong. Don't worry! You're not the only one!

i know what you are going through. I do not drink very much and i went to a college that had a reputation for being a party school; to the tenth degree so i had a hard time fitting in at first; but then i learnt a few rules... just get a coke or water or something and be sociable, most people won't care at all what you drink.

cola + lime = "rum & coke/ whiskey + coke"
iced tea w/ lemon = "ice pick"
cranberry juice w/ lemon = "vodka crann"
sprite w/ lemon or lime= "vodka tonic/gin tonic"
OR you could tell everyone to get off your case, you are not a drinker but you are the super coolest person in the bar b/c you are offering to take anyone home who needs a sober ride after the festivites. GREAT networking opportunity and seriously, everyone ALWAYS loves the sober driver and you will be the only one tomorrow who really remembers what happened so you will be the consult at the water cooler on Monday morning as to who made the biggest *** of themself! How is that for fitting in! Besides, once everyone gets a little tipsy, all you will have to do is nodd you head and smile b/c drunk people love to hear themselves talk and love people who will listen! ;)

Why feel like an outsider. It's much more interesting to watch the people who are drinking. As long as you are outgoing and have a fun personality, I'm sure people won't care much for what you are drinking.
If you do decide to drink, and it's a fancy place, I'm sure they offer wonderful martini's. Don't be afraid to ask the bartender what types they have to offer. That's what they're there for.

Coke with a lemon or Sprite with a lime in an 8- ball glass with NO or only 2/3 full of ice. Looks like a rum and coke or a gin and tonic.
or ask the bartender for club soda in a wine glass if it's a more classy event. It looks like sparkling wine.

Just get a soda or something. But if you don't drink, don't start at the party for sure. SOmeone always gets drunk and ends up making a fool of themselves at the christmas party. Just make sure it isn't you. Then you really get to look like an idiot and they talk about it for years to come...

Club soda with lemmon. it looks like a drink and it shouldnt be questioned. I would have a few of them and maybe a beer or two or a glass of wine.
it is ok to say something like "I am not a big drinker" "I dont like to drink and drive" "I may have a drink later"

It sounds like you're not opposed to drink though...so if you want to order a cocktail, I'd get something with out much alcohol in it:
Amstel light or Heineken light (beer)
Amaretto sour
Baileys Irish Cream on ice or with coffee
Kahlua and coffee
If you don't want alcohol at all, just get a sprite on ice in a highball glass.

I don't think anyone cares. You can say you are driving, you can say you don't drink for personal reasons, you can say your friend was killed by a drunk driver and you haven't touched the stuff since. Or you can say nothing...order whatever you want...people might not even notice. A "no thanks, I'm good" works well.
Volunteer to be designated driver...your coworkers will have a safe ride home and you can often get free or 1/2 priced sodas.
