No it would not be "bad karma." In fact, a mala made by you and given to a friend may be more auspicious to use than a mala made by a stranger and purchased in a store. A mala is blessed by using it. Say your mantra on it for a round before giving to your friend. If your friend has a teacher (swami or lama, etc.) who can formally bless it for her/him, all the better if she/he so desires to make that request.

Isn't that the Hindu word for a rosary or worry beads?

I'm not a Hindu, but, I've studied Hinduism and I think it is not "bad karma" to make one, in fact it should get you "good karma"; especially when it's a gift for a friend.

What I've understood of Hinduism is that it believes in the "Nirguna nirakara deva" and that we are all one with God in the statement "Aham Brahmasmi". Isn't that right?

If this is true, then, what greater "blessing" do you need than that of Brahma?

Just a thought.

Cheers!
