My son brushes his teeth every morning and night (he is 9). I have noticed the past week or 2 they are turning a brown color with white streaks. He has a dentist apt for a cleaning Jan11th but I am so picky about teeth I cant wait till then to fix it. Can anyone tell me what he is doing wrong? He uses Mentadent Whitening Toothpaste,

More than likely he is picking up stain from the foods or drinks he is eating. Does he drink a lot of dark sodas, tea, koolaid? Some of these have dark coloring in them and can stain the teeth quite a bit. If he is not taking the time to brush well even if he is brushing 2x per day the stain will also be very pronounced. Also when is the last time you changed his toothbrush? We recommend changing your toothbrush every 3 months or earlier if needed and the spin brushes do a really great job.
Mentadent whitening for a 9 yr old is okay but you may want to make sure he is getting the cavity protection in Colgate or Crest.

If he is using whitening toothpaste intentionally then he should be aware of the appropriate hygiene needed along with the whitening process. Any darkening or staining that comes on "suddenly" is not from taking any antibiotic medications. This medication would have had to been used during the "formation" of the teeth. People still want to blame medication even after all these years. The use of the antibiotic Tetracycline during the development of the teeth, before their eruption with children years ago caused many to have permanently stained teeth. There are rinses that will cause staining, but usually around the gingival area and this is removable. My advice would be call and move his appointment to an earlier date. Let them know what is happening, I'm sure they will work to get him in quickly.

Additional information: I wouldn't suggest using a rinse or anything different until his dentist can evaluate this condition. You may toss something into the mix that causes another problem to develop.

Maybe he is missing his front teeth when he brushes. Ask him if you can try to brush away the coloring. If a toothbrush doesn't work try scraping it with your fingernail. If that works then he should be fine until his cleaning appointment. If you can't scrape it off it could be deeply embedded stain which is ok or a cavity starting which is not so good. See if you can get in to your dentist to have them take a look.
