I have asked for a free range one because I try to be animal friendly. It has now occured to me that I do not really know what a capone is (other than being a chicken of course). What I mean is, I order one because it is possible to get a good sized bird (we do not, as a family like turkey), so how is this extra size achieved, and can it possibly be ethical? I have seen pictures on TV of overweight birds in terrible distress because their legs could not take their weight. Can someone please tell me anything about the rearing etc. of these birds?

The caponisation of poultry is banned in the United Kingdom on animal welfare grounds, though the meat itself is not illegal.

A capon is a castrated male rooster whose meat is considered to be slightly sweeter than that of a regular roaster chicken. Its only slightly larger than a regular chicken in most cases. If I recall, they are only 2-3 lbs larger than the average roasting chicken. There might be some that go up to 10-11 lbs.

Basically, capons are available in much the same way as regular supermarket chickens. You can get everything from regular mass-produced chickens to organic, free range birds.

As far as distressed birds go, that has as much to do with species as is has to do with types of poultry. You can cross-breed species of any bird-chicken, turkey, duck, partridge, quail, etc. and end up with a genetically engineered animal with significant problems. I seem to recall someone telling me that the standard American turkey is white, has greater breast meat, and is actually incapable of flight. This is a significant difference from the large colorful turkeys of only a few generations ago.

A capon is a castrated chicken, so that they grow bigger. Probably treated same as any other chicken. Being sexless seems to make them eat more and not chase other chickens, so they don't work off the food as fast.

The word s capon ....a free range bird will be as tough as old boots...all that running around makes tougher musles..

Young male (cockerel) chicken which has been castrated and fattened to improve its flavour and also make it artificially fat. The Romans discovered the merits of gelding a cockerel produced a plumper and meatier bird

A Capone - wasn't he an American gangster who got done for tax evasion?
He died years ago so the meat would probably be a bit tough.

i always thought it was a capon? is it not a castrated ****?

Could be wrong? tastes the same and would be reared the same just no nooky for him in the old hen house!!!!!

It is a castrated chicken, more meat ,less bones, they are very tasty, no idea about the rearing,sorry.
