My son was suspended for one day (tomorrow) from school. I will be working from home. Any ideas on how he should spend the day? I can't see letting him sit in front of the TV while I try to work. I want this to be a punishment, not another day off. However, he is hyper and needs something to occupy his time. Suggestions?

The principal had to get between my son and one other child who were fighting. Afterwards, my son was ripping mad and tried to leave the school yard. I don't know what the fight was about.

Are there chores around the house that he can do?
For example, he is probably enough old to sort clothes even if he can't fold them. He also should be old enough to dust. If you have anything that needs to be stacked or sorted or organized neatly, he should be able to do it. It may be a struggle with his hyperactivity to keep him focused, but it would definitely not be a fun day home from school.

Well, for one thing, I would have him write a paper on what the fight was about; what caused it, why he was angry, what he could've done to handle the situation better, etc. Of course it won't be school-work perfect, but it will make him think about his actions a little bit more. And it will give you some insight into the situation. Make sure he does any make up work his teachers send home. Then, to keep him physically occupied, have him clean his room, dust the living room, organize the pots and pans or tupperware or whatever, sort the laundry, etc. Kids his age can help around the house! Just choose appropriate jobs for him. Definitely no t.v., video games, etc.

Of course you will need to speak to your son about fighting and also how dangerous it is to leave the school without a parent. As to what to do at home, it would be helpful for you to give him schoolwork, any assignments or study books you may have will be enough. It may also be a good time for him to open up to you as to why he got angry and physical with the other kid. He needs to know that it is punishment and he needs to still do school work, it may also be helpful for him to write down exactly what he was feeling at the time and an apology note will be nice.

Make a list of things to do. Start with writing an apology letter. Move on to cleaning up his room. Add in some more chores. Don't let him watch ANY TV. Have him do some school work even if you didn't get any from his teacher.

Is there a way you can get to a bookstore and get one of those grade-appropriate workbooks? They have them for all subjects.
That way, if the teachers didn't send him home with schoolwork or homework, he's still learning and working like he'd be in school.
I'd also consider giving him an assignment like writing a short essay about why he got in trouble and how he can avoid doing it again.

Make him write an essay about why he's suspended and what he;ll do different next time. Tell him that he has to stay in one spot (ie kitchen chair at table) until he is done. If he leaves the spot, reprimand him and take away his privileges.

Well, if he was suspended, it means he did someting wrong - maybe have him write an appology letter to whom ever he made upset? That is what I would do - make sure it is well written and neat. To the principal, or the student ....

How about make him read a book and then do a book report on it. He could write a few paragraphs on what he did wrong to be suspended and what he can do to make it right.
