Because the second name is more specific.
Muhammad name is very prevalent in Islamic countries, if you called someone by Muhammad only , 90% of people will turn toward you.

For the most obvious reason, of course.

When too many people using the same name, you got to distinguish them by what would identify them.
What will happen if in the group of several "Muhammad" guy and you called out to him. You'll get several hands raised, if not several people looking at each other wondering which one of them are being called.
There's no special thing about it. Its only for reasons of convienience that we call a person with a Muhammad attach to their name with their second name. I have two brothers and a son that have Muhammad to their name. If I call Muhammad, all three will answer, see? That's why the second name.

i think the reason is, and especially in islamic countries, that there are so many boys with the name Muhammed so they use their second name to distinguish which one they are. Many people are called by their second name outside the home but inside they are called Muhammed. Im sure it has nothing to do with respecting the name etc. hope this helps!!

what are you talking about? All the Muhammeds I know call themselves "Muhammed."
Sometimes because there are so many Muhammeds (as it is a very common name) they will use their last name. When I was in the middle-east, the high school i went to has a class with 8 Muhammeds (2 with the same last name!!)

I agree with Kimo. Many people where I come from have composite names with the first part Muhammad and then another name and then the family name, so to distinguish between people they are called by the second part of the composite name. It is similar to having first and middle name and being called by the middle name. I remember when I was in school and they called the roll more than 30% had composite names starting with Muhammad.

If every Muslim men uses Muhammad as our 1st Name and other name as second name , it will be extremely difficult to call them with the 1st name, instead of second names Assuming there are ten Muslim men in a group with all of them using Muhammad as their 1st name, What will happened if we were to call them with their 1st names. U will see ten people reporting themseff to you. As such, using the second names is more appropriate and practical.

I just asked my husband that question last week. He was saying how his Pakistani friends are all called Muhammad, but no one calls them Muhammad. It's just written in their birth certificate. They call them by their second name, because so many people are called Muhammad.
There was a sheikh who said a guy asked him if it was true if your name is Muhammad, does that mean you're going to Jannah. The Sheikh said, if that was true, he would name all his children Muhammad... even his wife and daughters.
I'm not saying that's why people call their children Muhammad. I just wanted to share this story. ;-)

If there are 30 students in class and 15 of them, their name starts from Mohammad. If you call the name Mohammad so the 15 students will not understand to whom you are calling. Thats why the second name is almost different so u can call second name. Hope answer to the question.
