If it were something just like having lunch with a co-worker I liked, I'd have no problem with doing the asking.
If I were absolutely thrilled with a man, and truly 'wanted' him, most likely I'd be the shy one...and just hint around enough to hope that he would be the asker.
If he were truly shy (with me being shy, that way, myself), I think we'd wind up just hanging out for a while...talking, before either of us would be able to make a move.
Even having been married more than once, and being a mom, I still would not feel comfortable being the aggressor...it would make me feel that I cared more than he did...I would want to feel that he cared more, or at least as much.

Maybe I'd flirt a little or tell him I like him. But if he doesn't get the picture, it's time for him to wake up and/or be more of a man. Either that or he's not interested enough in the first place. And if he regrets it one day, that's his problem.
(Okay, so I'm a little old-fashioned)

Currently going through that. I would love it if he would, but I don't think he's interested really. However my friends say I'm blind cuz when he got all our #'s I'm the only one he texted that night. I don't know though.
He may be shy.....I'm a coward.....but one of these days I may get the confidence to do it. I hope.

if i really like the guy and thinking that he will never make the first move... i would definitely ask him out in a cute manner... i'd rather take the risk of asking him out... you'll never know, he might be the one you're lookin for :)

I think it is far more likely in today's society than it was in my day.
Things were quite formal then.
