Decent? Depends on what you are planning to do. 6 mp is fine. You can get nice 8x10's, and the file size is manageable. You can get higher mp, but you'll pay proportionately more for memory cards. I have two cameras. a 6 mp I carry around at parties, etc. and a 10 mp DSLR with interchangeable lenses I use when I need more options (better flash, better optics, etc.)

Let your budget decide. If you want to spend $300, get the max MP with nice optics. A cheap lens will ruin the quality of any shot.

A decent digital camera will have 6 megapixels or better these days. Almost all of them start with 7 mp on the low end. Past 8 megapixels, the extra megapixels are overkill and won't be seen at normal print sizes. In fact, cramming more photosites onto the sensor to make those extra megapixles tends to actually degrade the image, due to noise called by electrical interference.

5 to 7 is pretty common. 10 to 12 are more useful with a DSLR than with a digicam due to sensor size.

6 is plenty- 7 is sort of becoming the defacto standard. More is not always better, especially in a compact, smaller sensor and lenses, ergonomics and logical controls and sensors are also important.

Stay with 6-8. You only need more if you are going to make huge prints or edit it.
