Avianca has crashed before but that doesn't mean that you should doubt the safety of a flight. Remember Air Travel is still the safest way to travel in the world. It will not happen to you, don't worry.

Yes... planes are made with a whole lot more quality than most other things, Northwest airlines is still flying planes made 30+ years ago, and has no plans to retire them anytime soon.

An aircraft is only safe or unsafe as it's maintenance. Therefore you can't say an aircraft is inherently unsafe due to it's age.
