I don't think that you personality on the computer is the same as in person. People are more confident, upfront, and aggressive online. Things people are scared to be in person.

I think you can sorta kinda pick up personality through the keyboard but sometimes your/my perception will be off. Oftentimes sarcasm does not come through well via the internet. Since we are talking about religious issues here, most everyone comes across as quite religious. I do not talk about religious subjects anywhere near as often in "real life" as I do here. I cannot tell you the last time I had a debate in person regarding real vs symbolic Eucharist or Jesus's brethren.

Don't say conversing...I think chatting is against the rules. With regards your question, I think some people have seperate online personalities which they can create for themselves which may not match the actual personality.

You speak as if this "personality" as if its an objective thing that can be studied, or "known".
Personality is nothing but how you portray yourself. A "personality" doesn't exist on its own - its what you demonstrate to others.
How you present yourself could be an intentional lie... thus people sometimes get false impressions of someone they think they know.
And like you said - sometimes people misinterpret. Either because they don't have enough information or experience with you, or because you are deliberately putting on a show to fool others.

I am often surprised when I find out what gender other people are. There are quite a few of the women that I thought were men and one or two that are men I thought were women. I actually prefer the lack of knowledge about who the qwuestion or answer is from. This anonymity allows me to evaluate the question without concern over gender or race issues.

I can pick up on personalities based on how they respond to questions. They may just be in a bad mood that day, but there are generalities that make up the personality.

Yes, I think you can pick up on someone's personality via keyboard. One thing for sure--you figure out pretty quickly who does & does not have a sense of humor. =]. You can also tell how open-minded a person is, especially in R&S.

If my incredible sarcasm isn't apparent, you must be in a coma.
I think certain aspects of personalities shine through, but it is impossible to know the whole person. For example, I'm actually quite an optimist. I vent my cynicism on this site to keep me sane in real life.

Yeah, I definitely can pick up on a person's personality. And I agree with Bettie, we are definitely a little louder here than in person.
I am a sweetie, hope you picked up on that.

A little of both.... folks like CBG show themselves whether they intend to or not... Others, like Phoenix (above) will tell you straight out! lol I doubt if she's a mouse in person!
If they don't really stand out, I probably assign them traits without being completely aware of it...
