You actually already have the copyright if it is your original work that has not been commissioned by someone else. What I think you're referring to is registering your copyright. There are advantages and inducements for doing so but it is a mere formality and not necessary.

The copyright is automatic and in your name as the original artist. The real question is, do you want to transfer the copyright when you sell the painting. Transfering the rights might bring a better price as then the new owners can commercially exploit the work. It's your decision to make, but if you agree to the transfer, it should be in writing.
