What can I do about a 3cmlnkw error?

It keeps freezing my computer and breaking my internet connection. I've updated my modem drivers but that only helped for a few minutes. I'm running Windows 98 on a year-old USR Winfax 56K modem.

have you reinstalled the software that came with the modem (not just the drivers)?
