Asking someone to define why something is a sin without using the Bible or 10 Commandments is like asking a baseball player to hit a home run without a baseball bat. It won't happen.
I can't give you a serious answer without the Bible.
The Bible says it is a sin to commit adultery....Jesus said it is adultery even if you lust after another woman.
Mat 5:27-- Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
Mat 5:28-- But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

How can you ask a question about sin and preclude the scriptural argument. Where did we get the concept of sin? Who decided what acts are sins?
OK, I won't quote the Bible. It is a sin to covet one's neighbor's wife because God said it's a sin.

We are commanded to stop sin at its roots. Coveting is the first step, which can then lead to adultery, which can lead to divorce, bloodshed and even murder. Besides, if you spend all your time coveting your neighbour's wife, his possessions, his career and so on, are you really at peace? Are you living a life of love and generosity? No, you are focused in on your self and your own greedy desires. Sin is anything that hurts your neighbour and hurts yourself, and coveting certainly fits into this category.

Because envy is a sin. If you covet the neighbor's wife you are envying him. You are asking why coveting is sin, so how do you not expect to get biblical responses?

To everyone who answered "because god says so," I know that one of the Ten Commandments forbids such an act. Which of the other Ten Commandments must Christians obey? What about the one honoring the Sabbath?

Your neighbor's wife is your neighbor's wife- so you would be actually committing two sins- adultery and coveting. SHE DOES NOT BELONG TO YOU. Reverse it my friend, what if you were married, would you think it ok if your neighbor coveted your wife?

Jealousy and covetousness of someone else's possessions, including a wife, is a sin. How do you not understand that? Don't you know that the world is the way it is because of men who want things that are not theirs.

Coveting is lust, which is a sin, which leads to adultery, which is ALSO a sin:
Matthew 5:28 (New International Version)
28But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

soooo many people do not understand how incredibly ugly the sin of covetousness really is. it is the all-encompassing sin... all sin comes from covetousness.
you asked earlier what is wrong with sin? go through with this one and don't cry when a crazed spouse ends up blowing your head off.

It's sin cause God says it's sin. There is no other reason why anything would be sin, and since you're asking about sin, you need to know that it will kill you and drag you kicking and screaming into the pits of hell, as I pointed out in my answer to your last question.
