I was at a bar last weekend and there was a fight and the cops were called. Two Russian guys who were in the fight were arrested outside the bar. While they were being searched and questioned they are talking to each other and the other bar patrons in Russian despite knowing English. The cops were screaming at them to stop talking in Russian to each other.

Is there anything against this? Why couldn't they talk to each other in Russian?

While it is not illegal in and of itself, the police can claim that they were conspiring with others to attack the police.

Although it's not against the law, it would be frustrating for the police officer but if they have someone in the department that can speak Russian they would probably call and have that person translate.

I would just separate them if I was the arresting officer. It is impossible to talk to one another (in any language) if you are sitting in two different patrol car. It is a safety concern for the officers that they may be communicating some sort of escape attempt or coordinating an assault on the officer(s).

It is not illegal for the police to prevent someone from talking to another person while they are under arrest.

An officer was killed in TX when he stopped a car occupied by three (or four Hispanics). On the video they began speaking Spanish to one another. They coordinated with one another and attacked the Officer and killed him. If the Officer knew Spanish he would have had a chance to stop them.

"Why couldn't they talk to each other in Russian?"

Presumably because they were under the control of the police officers and are required to follow directions.

You know, just like everyone else who's been popped. The officer says "Jump!" and you jump. No jump = being bruited about. Not fun - been there, done that; following directions = fewer bruises (this is good).

I'm sure the police told them to shut up regardless of the language they were using. If they understand English they should have listened. Remember the saying

WHEN IN ROME DO AS THE ROMANS

why do you suppose they were talking in another language anyway ?

I write from the UK , I personally cannot see any argument to them talking in their own language, it is established they are both Russian,
Whats the problem??

Inept stupidity...causes this especially when drinking. For things to go better with the law...and since they know English...they were deliberately causing the situation to be worse. Stupidity on their part. (Probably just so they could SUE later) No law says they have to speak English....lets face it....This is an ENGLISH speaking Nation....LEARN IT....
