back when the human race was learning civilization, it played a positive role of helping the developing societies to stay cohesive, but as people become more knowledgeable about the world and how it works, religion becomes a divisive hindrance to progress

Here is what I think. If any of you think we are advanced as a civilization or more advanced in evolution than those 2000,3000, or 4000 years ago. I would have to say you need to humble yourself and look deeply at past civilizations. We haven't progressed much. Sure, we have some fancy technology...but that is not a measurement of civilization. We do the exact same things an ancient roman did, sleep, work, eat, play, sleep, repeat. Throw in an anomaly here or there, but we have really been doing the same thing for a very long time. Some may say, well things were more brutal back then...really? I don't think back then they had the means to wipe out millions of people with the push of a button...sounds pretty darn brutal to me. I don't think they routinely fried peoples brains to put them to death, they had their own brutal methods...but don't lie to yourself to try to convince yourself that we are less brutal than anytime before.
So if you think that religion was needed at some point in history, you better believe that it is still needed now. You wouldn't want a world without religion.

Hi....
Yes!
Good question!
Religion 'is' part of our evolution, our mental evolution is just as important, as our physical evolution!
Religion does have its place in our development and understanding, about our place in the World!
Although because these religions were developed 'before' our understanding of the Universe, it is difficult for the religious now, to associate their beliefs, with the vastness of space and the consequences that it brings!
Religion has its place for a certain amount of time and as seen today, is on its way out already!!
It is 'also' our mental evolution, that religion 'will' be replaced by logical thought, without which, we will remain stagnant and not be able to progress!!

No! not at all. The religion is man made. Hence it is obvious that religion was no where up to the point of evolution of man.

I think you might be confusing God with religion. God, for those who are believers, is the Big Kahuna who created this whole deal. Religion is an organized attempt to understand creation. Evolution, at least to me, is a scientific process. It seems plausible to me that the Big Guy created that scientific process along with the Earth and the Sun and rice pudding.

The Catholics have been truly oppressive. some clerics even held potential over the king with the prospect that they could excommunicate him; which skill they could get rid of him as a member of the church so as that he could finally visit Hell whilst he died. The Catholics additionally discovered, tortured and killed human beings of alternative religions such by means of fact the Anabaptist's (rebaptizers) in recent times only common as Baptists.

It appears to be a byproduct of us being social animals and have a high level of consciousness. Us being a social animal means we dwell on finding meaning, reasons, and a higher power. And us having a high level of consciousness means we are able to contemplate that which we can't answer.

Religion was created because humans need something to explain what they cannot...and so when something bad occurs they have someone to turn to, to make it all right or to use for an excuse as to why they did it.

For example, look was has happened to our society since we started to lose our religion (last 100 years). Then Jack the Ripper was an accomplished serial killer. Now he wouldn't even make the evening news.
