My hubby and I were having a discussion about this, and thought that you can not change a president during a time of war. We are still in war, as we are losing more soldiers now than when we first went into Iraq. I also don't see Bush bringing our men home anytime soon.
So my question is: Can a new president be instated during a time of war?
I know most canidates are using the "First thing I'll do is bring home our soldiers" So... can they even switch presidents now?

Yes, you can have an election during a war. The election of 1864 was conducted during the civil war. Also in 1812 saw the same thing. So yes, you can have an election during a war.

In the US, our executive rules for 4 years. If he is not eligible for reelection, or if they lose the election, they step down. No exceptions, except if it is not possible to conduct elections (massive emergencies and so on). While it isn't the best to have a president that is conducting a war to step down, the fact remains this is how it's done. If you change this, then you set a precedent that any president can start a war to stay in power, which is dangerous. We are a democratic republic, if the people want a leader that ends the war they vote them into power. Not that I agree with voting in a leader to end the war, but that is how it's done. Personally I think most of the potential candidates except Ron Paul would continue the war for some time and give it a chance to achieve more progress under their watch. Retreating isn't exactly as easy and rosy of a picture as they like to paint. It also leaves the region volatile, and it would most likely mean we would be returning 10, 20, maybe 30 years down the line to fix what we can fix now.

ya you can change presidents, just look at the Vietnam war it lasted 10 years and we changed presidents from Johnson to Nixon. plus i don't think we are considered at war with Iraq. i think its an occupation now just like after WW2 with Europe and Japan, until they get a government going.

Surely you know that Presidential elections are held every 4 years and that any person may only be elected twice to the office? Rain, snow or war.

There is no law about Presidential terms being affected by wartime. So yes at the next election he can and actually has to be replaced. He could technically be impeached and removed from office early but that is unlikely to happen.
