It is kind of like a clique in high school. Some people need to feel like the belong to something to feel "cool". However, this is the Internet...so if I would say that this "cool" clique, is not so cool after all. Just my opinion.

It's practically dead. The only reason it gives the impression of being a flourishing club is because people are too lazy to remove the "AM" from their screen names.

Actually the AM thing is just a response to religious rhetoric.
Whenever we are called names by loving religious people, we are more than willing to adopt them to highlight how 'threatened' we are by the names we are called.
That is why there are Vile Temptresses, and Atheist Mafia. Religious people go around calling us names and we say ok and adopt them. My name came from a fundamental that said I was fearless and would learn to one day fear God. So I adopted sansfear.
There are many other atheists with names that reflect the love poored on them by religious.
