Why would the founder Joseph Smith die for his belief if it wasn't true?

((Is this argument more convincing when applied to Jesus and his disciples?))

Lots have people have died defending what they believe in. That doesn't make something true. It is truth to them, though. So, if that's the case, who am I to say if they are right or wrong.

As far as Joseph Smith goes, he did die defending what he believed in. He was sitting in a jail, arrested under false pretenses. A mob decided to attack the jail. There were over 40 men with guns. Some stormed the jail, others stayed out in the street to shoot through the window. The guard had heard they were coming and gave Joseph a small handgun. That was the only defense the three men in the room had. So.. one against 40.. does that sound fair?? He was killed- along with his brother Hyrum- for what he believed in. Does that make him a martyr? In my opinion, yes. He was willing to die for what he believed in. If we could all have that resolve, no matter what our religion, the world would be a much better place.

I am with Beta Fishy- he is on the right track. I would also add to that the fact that he was 14 when he had his vision and as he told people about it they tormented him relentlessly about it. The children I know that are that age, would cave into the pressure of the crowd if they were trying to deceive others, at that age they would not put up with that kind of treatment to defend a lie. Most at that age would back down and stop talking about it anyway to appease the tormenters even if it were true.

Also Joseph Smith shot back at the people shooting him. Nobody was there to arrest him because he was ALREADY in jail. He died at the Carthage Jail. It was not his jailers that he was shooting at, rather and angry Mob from Carthage and Neighboring towns.. His Jailer actually had compassion on him and though he was not Mormon, did not agree with the reasons he was being held. Some people need to read their history.

What is true and what people believe in are frequently two different things. You know that.:) The argument that one wouldn't die for something that isn't true is at best pathetic. You could just have easily pointed out the Heaven's Gate cult.

Problem: Joseph Smith shot back when he was attacked.

Also, he wasn't dying for his belief.

Besides, lots of people are willing to die for their beliefs.

The difference between those people and the disciples is that the disciples weren't dying for their beliefs. The question is NOT, "Would you die for your beliefs?" because obviously lots of people would. The question is, "Would you die for something you KNEW was a lie?"...I don't think there's anyone who would.

Wow! Two whole LDS answers so far. The ones who know the answers to this question! What a concept.
It is true. That's why they willingly died to defend it. And yes, it is applicable to Jesus and the disciples. They died for what they believed in too.

I can see all of the bashers are out in spades today.
You people can lie until you are blue in the face, it won't change the fact that it is very true.

There are people who died defending the South during the Civil War? Does that mean that their beliefs were justified? At the same time, there were people who died in the name of the North. Does that mean that their conflicting beliefs were justified.

Right and wrong cannot be measured by the number of dead martyrs.

Look at how many were willing to drink poisoned kool-aid for Jim Jones! A willingness to die for your particular belief system isn't proof that it's true.

Just because someone dies for their faith does not make it true. There are plenty of other factors that go into Joseph Smith, especially with Mormonism.
