Aluminum alloys: Generally pure aluminum alloyed with copper, zinc, and manganese.

Composite wings (made of fiberglass or carbon fiber) are out there but remain in the minority.

There are also steel tube wings covered with fabric and wood frame wings also covered with fabric.

There are several ways of making an aluminum wing. The traditional way is done by forming sheet aluminum into the spars, ribs, and skin and then riveting it together. There are some aluminum castings for complex structures and aluminum extrusions (pushed thru a mould like macaroni) for other structures like stringers, etc.

A newer process involves milling a big solid chunk of aluminum into the shape of a wing skin with all the structural pieces (spars, ribs, stringers) as part of the same piece. This is generally done by a chemical process and is very time consuming and expensive, but a gives superior strength to weight ratio and doesn't leave any tool marks to potentially cause cracks.

Actually....there are several possibilities..
Wings can be made from:

1) Wood with fabric covering - popular with small aircraft and what the first aircraft were built from. Very strong for thier weight and wood has the property of not fatiguing. ....but does rot

2) Aluminum alloy - Sheet aluminum alloy over an aluminum alloy spar with aluminum alloy ribs. Very strong, resistant to deterioration but can corrode over time.

3) Composite - there are several materials that come under this catagory including fibreglass, kevlar, carbon graphite held in a matrix by either polyester resins or epoxy resins. These can be extremly strong, aerodynamicly smooth, resistant to deterioration, and corrosion proof but also can be sensitive to UV radiation and defects and damage can be difficult to assess.

Finally....wings (as well as other aircraft structures) can be made of any combination of the above....and on modern aircraft...they usually are ie: Aluminum alloy and composite panals are a common technique.

A great Bette Midler song! I don't know much about wings. I know angel wings are made out of gossamer, so that is what I would like mine to be made out of. A nursing supervisor many years ago who had faith in my talent was the wind beneath my wings who gave me the courage to do what needed to be done. Thank you. This is a great question.

they are made using aluminum alloy as well as titanium and bronze as well as various other alloys some of the newer wings are of a carbon fiber composite used mainly in military applications for the most part the the structural parts are machined out of billet material or from forgings and then assembled with rivets

The A-4 Skyhawk wing skin is sheet steel.

Hardened Aluminum alloys with various components like airelions and spoilers of composites. Verrry complex. Hard, demanding and the skilled craftsmen who do it deserve as much respect as engineers.

Alluminum but things are going to change in the future. Due to the technology in the industry it will be made out of composits like on the 787. its just as strong but a lot lighter giveing longer range.

Steel, aluminum, fabric, wood, composites. It really depends on what kind of airplane you're talking about.

Dang it! Helipilot got the best answer on this one. I can't
improve on it but at least I get 2 points for saying so. :-)
