It's actually a letter from the IRS. Call them and ask for it and they'll send it along. All it states is that you did not file a return for a specific year or years.

The letter 1722 doesn't exist any more. It was replaced by the certificate of non-filing which as another poster told you is an option on the form 4506-T. You might want to mention this to your financial aid office that they are telling people outdated information. (At some point the new IRS employees aren't going to know what you are talking about.)

The form will be processed for tax year 2006. The form will not be processed for tax year 2007 until May or June of 2008. (The form not only says you didn't file, it also says you didn't appear to have enough income to be required to file.)

If you did not file taxes last year, submit an IRS 1722 non-filing status form. To obtain this form, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. Do not press ANY buttons just stay on the line.

Get Form 4506-T from irs.gov, and check the box on line 7. If your browser is set up for it, you can fill it out before printing it.
