Talk about lucky! That means his birthday could be celebrated at the same time as a holiday that was already massively popular and entrenched in Western society.

Wow, maybe God induced labor at that time to make the transition less difficult for pagans. You know, since they would be forced to convert or be killed, an easy transition would be good.

Such is the power of God.

If he really lived at all, Jesus was born in the summer, according to objective Bible scholars. Christians just took over many things, e.g. existing festivals, temples, gods, etc. and put their names on them. You have the right idea in seeing that they found a way to make their new religion popular at once. An objective person who realizes this, knows the whole thing is a farce.

It's true that the festival was celebrated around this time, but no one ever said Jesus was born on the 25 December. They put the festival there to help convert the Pagans (as several Pagan festivals fall around this time). Jesus would have been born (if he existed at all) in Spring, as lambs were about.

Jesus was born in the fall of the year......
#1 reason.....The herds were still out of doors as the shepherds were tending their sheep..In Bethlehem they have to keep the stock indoors as the winters are brutal.
#2 reason.....John the baptist was born in the spring by Elizabeth, Mary's cousin. When Mary told Elizabeth she was pregnant with God's son the unborn John leaped in Elizabeth's womb. Elizabeth was 6 months pregnant.
#3......There was a reason we don't know his birthdate...the ancient ones did not celebrate birthdays.

And yes they did inculcate saturnalia with xmas

If you did your homework you would know when Jesus was actually born, and that it was not Dec. 25th. It is only a tradition that started when we started celebrating the day of his appearing as a holiday and now it's too rooted to bother with changing. But God is not concerned about holiday accuracies like he is that we worship him. Are you doing this important thing?

Wow. Talk about your ignorance. The church actually chose to celebrate Christ's birth on December 25th. Instead of christianizing a pagan holiday, they made a rival celebration. You really need to read some stuff before you speak.

I think Jesus was born in the spring...

You confuse the Catholic Jesus with the Biblical one.

He was born in the spring, actually. The people who invented his godly characteristics used other important dates from other religions/cultures to make the transitions in society (religous etc) easier to accept.

why do atheists think this is a big "gotcha"? The exact day doesn't matter, everyone knows it isn't the exact day of his birth. What matters is what people are remembering on that day.

A year and a month and a day are arbitrary counting methods to try to pinpoint a "point" in earths orbit of the sun. I don't see why people are so hung up about that.

It is also the winter solstace, so it is pretty much a given that a lot of global cultures would consider this to be a holy time.

It's just mathmatically favorable, bottom line really.
