Lying is only for people with good memories and no conscience. The truth can always be told gently . There is an old proverb that says 'Oh what tangled webs we weave, when first we venture to deceive'. It's so much harder to disentangle ourselves from lies than to tell the truth in the first place.

That was my answer. I'm atheist.

Lying is justifiable if you do it to spare someone's feelings or to protect someone. It doesn't say that in the Bible. It requires you to think for yourself.

EDIT: Yes, lying is the opposite of honesty. We know the definition of "lying". Why is honestly inherently good? Surely you've experienced a situation where honesty would have led to insult or pain? Read up a bit on situational ethics, it goes a lot deeper than just "lying = bad".

No. Lying is wrong. Not telling the truth, however, is justifiable. Lying is when you don't tell the truth just for the heck of it. Not telling the truth is for the greater good. Rahab didn't tell the truth to save the spies who infiltrated Jericho.
