Jesus and His followers believed teh end was nigh, that the generation would see the Son of Man coming in glory. No reason to write for posterity, only epistles and traveling to the churches would have been required. I suspect as the apostles started to die people decided to record their oral histories as Gospels so as to preserve their memories for the next generation.

Read the first book of Revelation JOhn is told to write down what he saw.
