I bought my Christmas cards alreday and wrote out some for the coworkers who work in my department, cz I know them and work with them. I still havent passed them out yet. The other day,I got a Christmas card from one of my coworkers in another department whom I dont even know or met!! Am I supposed to give out cards to our whole company or just the people I work with? If I give it to the people I just work with, does that make it look bad that I didnt give it to anyone else?

I'd just give cards to the people you know and work with, not the whole company. it doesn't seem sincere if you give a card to everyone and their mom. some people just like to give cards or stocking stuffers to the whole company, but you don't have to reciprocate.

Christmas has become very commercial hasn't it. In my opinion, Christmas is for the children or else it gets totally out of proportion.
Give cards to the people you know and interact with at work on a regular basis. If you regularly use the services of the department that co-worker is based in, then send a card to the department as a whole. Especially if its the mailroom or IT support! It lets them know you appreciate their role.
If you really don't know this person and don't use their department for anything, then perhaps you have a secret admirer!?

I would give out cards to anyone I worked with or friends in the office. While that person was being nice by giving you a card, if you don't know each other, it wasn't necessary and a little annoying because then it puts the pressure on other people to live up the bar that's been set!

An easy route would be to send out a blast e-card to people you don't know well and personal cards to those you work with or friends.

Getting a Christmas card from someone you don't even know is a little weird. I think your initial instinct to give to just your close co-workers is correct. I always try to give with sincere thoughts and warmth and if you hardly know the person, how can you sincerely express a close, personal emotion.

Perhaps to alleviate any undue embarrassment, send a card to the other departments wishing them ALL a happy Christmas. Or you could keep one or two spare blank cards in your desk and quickly fill them in and give then to any nutty, unknown people who give you cards.

Don't feel guilty for not giving cards to people you don't know. When I worked for the law firm, I received cards from coworkers I never really talked to but wasn't obligated to recipocate.

Don't put yourself under undo pressure...this season brings enough for most people as it is!
