Jesus said to him: sell what you have and give to (the) poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
When the young man heard this statement, he went away sad, for he had many possessions.

i'm trying to see if "conservative" christians are different from "liberal" christians - in that they don't pick and choose what parts of the bible they believe. Looks like everyone chose to ignore this bible verse.

Real Conservative Christians are completely unlike the false ones you see on TV. Those so-called conservatives have one God, and that is Money.

I am an atheist. I don't believe in gods, yours included. But rich people can find better altruistic ways to use their money than to give it to the poor or to people who claim to be collectors of charity for the poor. That would be true even if none of the latter were swindlers.

Giving money to the poor is mostly just wasting it. The poor will spend the money, and stay poor, and nothing is gained. It isn't necessary to recognize that much of that donated money would be spent on cigarettes, liquor, prostitutes, drugs, and bling from Neiman Marcus. I'm sure you remember what "the poor" from New Orleans did with all that FEMA money after Hurricane Katrina flooded their homes. Money given to the poor is mostly wasted, even if the poor only buy food and other necessities with it.

There simply are too many people. Nature intended the human herd to be culled regularly by warfare in which rival groups beat each other's brains out with clubs. I'm not joking: that really is the truth. Every species of animal has evolved some kind of competitive behavior that separates the strong from the weak and gives advantages to the former in breeding, and our evolutionary adaptation for doing that is low-technology warfare.

So, pack the poor into boot camp, train them as soldiers, and send them off to fight the Mexicans for possession of southern California. Tell them that they can have the land if they win. Then they won't be poor, anymore.

I am a very liberal christian, so my answer is kinda moot, butI have very little in the way of money and posessions, but I still give what is possable. I donate money that I really do not have all the time, I give away what I no longer need in hopes that those who are in need will not have to spend the little they have to aquire what they need.

I don't know I think that everyone should be like that, so to be a better human not just a better christian.

I don't know what your first question has to do with the link.

Some Christians (and some non-christians) have given up a significant portion of their money and/or time to help the poor. There are many, many others who do nothing or rely on their church to do their part.

If we all acted more the charitable ideal, maybe we wouldn't have all the problems we have in the world.

Wow, I'm glad you didn't as the progressive Christians that, I might have to answer. I actually came to the Lord after being homeless and addicted to alcohol. I give back in many ways, but I believe the most valuable asset I have is spreading His word and helping the alcoholic who still suffers. I have a "Pay it Forward" type of attitude.

I have not given up everything to help the poor. But I don't think this is exactly what Christ has called us to do. He has called us to love one another and show love to others, whatever way that person needs it. Rich people need love too! And no, you don't go to hell for not doing that that. And you won't go to heaven for doing it either. Everyone is going to hell, except for those who accept the grace of God. This doesn't mean we don't have to be good and generous and proove our acceptance of that grace in our lifestyle, but we need to make sure the focus is on Christ, not ourselves and what we do.

and all you atheists out there? Get over yourselves. You can deny that atheism isn't another religion but that's exactly what it is.

You obviously have no life...I don't have to give up everything unless I want to walk with Jesus in the same manner as he...mainly because I don't want to be a monk living in a monastery...but through the centuries there have been many many people who have given up all worldly possessions to live as Jesus did...this might be over your head but...even Buddhists and Hindus have similar beliefs...give up all worldly possessions and devote their lives to worship...but the billions who have not chosen to do so are not condemned to hell...

Being a no life sphincter like yourself might do it though...how many poor people have you helped at any cost???

Its not required of us. This young man was full of ego and Jesus put him to the test to see of he was really sincere. The young man thought more of his wealth than following God. Had the man done as he was asked to, God would have richly blessed him, but he didn't stick around and obey.

you got the wrong idea....only once did Jesus say to do that ...and the was talking to a rich young man who loved his riches too much

if we give up absolutely everything to give to the poor, we will also be poor and then someone will have to feed us too

I believe in helping the poor and I do this alot...if you notice , most charities are christian based.....you find very few atheist groups helping anyone.
