depends completely on what you want in a dog! chihuahuas I have seen don't like to play with other dogs, theyre lap dogs but for some reason (just in my experience what people tell me) theyre not as affectionate. Toy poodles, if theyre like all other poodles, they are extremely clingy, playful and affectionate, and need alot of brushing/grooming. Toy fox terrier..haha energizer bunny. Maybe take out a book on toy breeds at the library and then decide?

I have owned a boarding kennel in the past, so I have some understanding of the differences in many of the breeds. I believe if you are looking for an outgoing, not too "yappy" , and easy to train small dog, the Pug is one of the best. Many toy dogs do bark quite a bit at strangers, whereas the pug is not noted for being a "barker" and is a friendly and outgoing breed. It is a close relative of the Pekingese, which is another toy dog that is very loveable and friendly, but this type of dog is also quite expensive and has a heavy coat which may become quite a chore to keep unless it is regularly groomed. If you want to keep expenses down and not have to pay for a groomer, it is far better to have a dog with an easy care coat such as the Pug. Pugs are sociable and yet will be a protector if necessary. Furthermore, pugs are "clowns" and love to give and get attention and affection. It is my understanding that they also have fewer housebreaking issues . Some of the toy breeds are well known as being difficult to housebreak. An added benefit is that they are a toy dog which has few health problems and if kept "fit" so that they do not become too fat, they will live a long life and hopefully with fewer vet bills. It is important that what ever breed you select, that you buy from a reputable breeder that will provide you with the AKC papers PLUS a written health and temperament guarantee. If you can not afford to go this route then by all means go to a shelter and get on the waiting list if they do not have any pugs or pug mixes available.

Shih-Tzus aren't as small as a lot of the other toy breeds, but they are my favorite small breed dog. I have met many different dogs through working at a vet clinic, and Shih-Tzus are absolutely my favorite small breed dog. When they are raised in a loving home with good socialization and training, they are just fun, playful, cuddly dogs. They don't shed, but they do have to be trimmed by a groomer often if you don't want to keep up with Really long fur. A Shih-Tzu would be my suggestion. You can do research on all the different dogs that are suggested and figure out which small breed dog fits your lifestyle best. Once you know what you are looking for you can start visiting your local animal shelters to find your new companion. Good Luck!

I think the Dachshund is an excellent toy breed. It all depends on your personality and your lifestyle though. Go to these sites and do some research before you decide on one. Good Luck!

I would definately say a chihuahua. They live the longest, almost 20 years, and are very loyal. They don't shed very much, and if given proper socialization, are very friendly. They are super smart and fit easily into a cute purse!! :)
