...then why do some many people believe in 'guardian angels,' ghosts, and other spiritual beings? I just asked the question earlier..."What happens when you die"...and the biggest response was "nothing, you just die." Well, if nothing happens then why do so many people believe in these 'spiritual beings?'

Everyone around the world, just about, believed that our planet was flat and one particular race believed that it rested on pillars held up by elephants held on the back of a turtle which sat on a snake that floated on the never-ending ocean that was the universe. People believe in weird things.

The psychological answer- as we are programmed to want to survive as a species, we fear death, and people make up these things due to their fear.

Now stop asking these silly questions and go get some fresh air.

As a Buddhist I'd say plenty happens when you die, but more than I have time or space here to discuss. Some key words for you to do research on are "the bardo between death and rebirth", "karma", "rebirth", etc.

Books to read: "The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying" by Sogyal Rinpoche, "The Tibetan Book of the Dead" translated by Gyurme Dorje.

How can you come up with that kind of conclusion? Do you have any base why would you ever say that. Let me tell you one thing, it's all about faith and what human do have inside and it is human rights to believe in anything that related to what they have believed in. What you have thought about everything in this world, even the idea when you die, has nothing to do with anybody else, even in the same faith. It's your personal quality of faith that will save you and give you a wide perspective about yourself.

All cultures all over the world experience near-death phenomenon. It is not hard to imagine that early in humanity's existence, our ancestors also had such experiences. Since not everyone who has a near-death experience actually DIES, some of them would have returned and communicated their experiences.

Considering they had no idea of neurology, or that neurology even existed, why would they have any reason to question the veracity of these stories?

The obvious was already stated... Atheist don't believe any of these things. The people that believe those things are the same people that believe in life after death.

Wishful thinking, nothing else. It's obvious that thinking of death scares people, and the mind races for a way out. Since there is no way out, the mind falls back to fantasy and superstition, like children do.

Because it benefited the species for them to do so apparently, or the mental apparatus that was best suited to survival also tends to generate this belief. Most people thought the world was flat but that doesn't mean it is.

You posit your question in a strange way. Are you implying that because people believe in things, they must be true?

Of course, you're saying nothing that all believers don't say anyway, but I've rarely seen it expressed with such naked naivete. It's refreshing.

Same reason why people believe in God. It gives them comfort because they can't cope with the idea of dying someday otherwise..
