How can one determine the validity of a hadith. I have become aware of the term 'weak hadith'... is it possible that some hadith are not the words of the prophet pbuh. If this is the case how are we to discern the truth in ambiguous matters.

The sanad and matn are the primary elements of a hadith. The sanad is the information provided regarding the route by which the matn has been reached. It is so named due to the reliance of the hadith specialists upon it in determining the authenticity or weakness of a hadith. The term sanad is synonymous with the similar term isnad. The matn is the actual wording of the hadith by which its meaning is established, or stated differently, the objective at which the sanad arrives at consisting of speech. [5] The sanad consists of a ‘chain’ of the narrators each mentioning the one from whom they heard the hadith until mentioning the originator of the matn along with the matn itself. The first people who received hadith were the Companions; so they preserved and understood it, knowing both its generality and particulars, and then conveyed it to those after them as they were commanded. Then the generation following them, the Followers received it thus conveying it to those after them and so on. So the Companion would say, “I heard the Prophet say such and such.” The Follower would then say, “I heard a Companion say, ‘I heard the Prophet .’” The one after him (after the Follower) would then say, “I heard someone say, ‘I heard a Companion say, ‘I heard the Prophet …’’” and so on.[6]

I'm not a Muslim, but hope this helps. Here's also an interesting article

The Imams and Sheik will look at the Hadiths and then look at the history of the men who wrote them to see if they are trustworthy or not. If the person who recorded the Hadiths even told 1 lie then that Hadith is deemed as weak. The most authentic Hadiths are from Bukhari. I'm not sure of the other authentic Hadiths as I don't have a book of them with me. If the Hadiths come from a reliable source then they are deemed as strong. I know in Saudi Arabia if the Hadiths are weak then the Imams and Sheik will write weak on the Hadith and cast it aside. In Saudi everyone studies the strong Hadiths only so they don't get confused as well as the Qur'an.

"Wisdom" is necessary to discern the truth in all ambiguous matters!

A human must find out the "Truth" for themselves, and not rely on clerics to voice their opinion as to whether something is permissible or not permissible.

The Truth is within the heart of man.
God is within man. Remember this well!

All the hadith have been categorised as weak, strong and fabricated. There are many other categories also. If you get proper knowledge, you can know which hadith is strong.
