If I had a $4000 budget I would be looking at Mazda with a 4 cylinder engine, their quality is nearly that of other Japanese makes but for some reason they are less popular and often much cheaper than Honda or Toyota. The 4 cyl engines are built in Japan, some V-6 engines may be built by Ford.

I currently drive a Chevy but I was raised around Fords and I haven't see anything go majorly wrong with them. Escorts are pretty popular cars, so even if something did break down on it, it'd be easy to hit up the junkyard and find a replacement part for cheap. 70,000 miles isn't bad at all for a 2001 (my car is a 2005 and has 30,000!) Make sure to shop around a bit before you make your decision because you might find something better if you keep looking. I thought $9,000 was a good deal for my car until I found a brand new 2007 with 0 miles for $10,000!

I have owned and driven Ford products for fifty years. Other than the late seventies and early eighties when all American cars were pieces of crap, Fords have been reliable, cheap, and easy to repair. I currently drive Ford trucks and Mercedes passenger cars. As far as the Escort ZX2 is concerned, you should have many happy miles of transportation.

Doesn't seem too bad, but I don't know if I would say "only" 70,000 miles. That's kind of getting up there a bit. My friend has had two Ford Escorts and has had some trouble with both of them, but then again, she's not the best driver. She totaled her first one in an accident but her second one (I think it was a 1999) is having troubles now (I'm not sure what kind) and she can't drive it out of town.
All in all, I think it's not a horrible deal, but you might find better.

I am in the biz and I think this car is a good deal. This car is made for 1 purpose, to be driven for any reason, in town, highway, whatever. I have booked it out and it appears to be a great buy!! This car should book at about 5,500-6,000. Not only that but they are giving you a 3 month warranty and a money back guarantee. This is a car buyers deal. Good Luck

always like the Escort but make sure the timing belt has been replaced, if they say maybe, tell them to include that replacement with the price of the car, cuz it cost 600-800 bucks and if it breaks you are screwed

i have a good suggestion consumer reports publishes
cars and year models to both buy and avoid.
that would be a good source.its for used cars,
also, you may want to have a good mechanic check it out
if you decide to buy it. good luck.
