Hello. This started happening about 4-5 days ago (Nov. 29th). My mouth, lips and especially my tongue started to become VERY dry. My tongue is very dry and it hurts. I've tried drinking different fluids throughout the day and using lip balm (it does help my lips, but does nothing for my tongue) What's wrong with me? My tongue is mostly dry from the tip of my tongue to the middle of my tongue, and only on the top of my tongue (the bottom of my tongue is still very wet and produces a lot of saliva).

Is there some way that my tongue has stopped making saliva? Please help. (I do not take any medications or prescriptions --- actually, I started using NODOZ caffeine pills because I havent been getting much sleep --- is this a side effect of NoDoz?) Thank you all very much for reading my question and I hope to get some informative answers!

Edit: Thank you all for your answers! I have determined that it is the NoDoz caffeine pills. I have stopped taking them and starting chewing gum (thanks for the tip on the gum!) and my mouth is feeling much more wet and better. It should clear up in a day or so. Thank you all again!

I'm a dentists. It is very likely that the caffeine pills are what is causing your tongue to go dry. Your tongue doesn't actually produce saliva there are special glands in your mouth called Stensen Ducts, along with saliva glands under the tongue. When you mentioned that your tongue was not dry underneath that means that you are not having a problem with your saliva glands. My suggestion is stop taking the caffeine pills and give this a week to heal. If the condition does not change after a week then you must go in and see your dentists. Hope this helps.

HELLO MIKE,

SOME OF MY PATIENTS ALSO SUFFER WITH XEROSTOMIA (dry mouth).
IF THEY RULE OUT MEDICATIONS AS A POSSIBLE CAUSE FOR THIS I ASK IF THEY CONSUME EXCESS CAFFEINE. I RECOMMEND THE BIOTENE PRODUCTS WHICH ARE AVAILABLE OTC AT ANY PHARMACY AND HAVE A COMPLETE LINE OF PRODUCTS TO TREAT DRY MOUTH.
THE NODOZ ARE CONCENTRATED STRAIGHT CAFFEINE INTO YOUR BODY, YOU MAY CONSIDER MELATONIN ALSO OTC W/O THE XEROSTOMIA EFFECTS. THIS HELPS YOU HAVE A RESTFUL NIGHTS SLEEP W/O SIDE EFFECTS AND ISN'T ADDICTIVE.

Definitely because main reason for dry mouth is because of tension ,anxiety the saliva secretion will be decreased, another reason is because certain medicines used for other problem in the body also leads to dry mouth .so u can keep chewing sugarless chewing gum so that will increase the saliva secretion, other method is have vitamin c tablets, keep chewing them it will increase saliva secretion

very likely to be due to the caffeine pills. Caffeine dehydrates you so make sure to drink plenty of fluids that don't contain caffeine when you are taking them, you should start to see a difference then.

I would stop any caffeine and start drinking only hot chocolate, no colas, no coffee - coffee is bad for you anyway!! Then get yourself some laxatives, the good kind and take them once a day until you feel better. Always keep laxatives at hand because a dirty colon is the cause of all disease. And pray about everything you do!!
