It is not ok! We teach our children that it is wrong to lie. Then we tell them about Santa, the tooth fairy and the Easter bunny and want them to believe our lies. No wonder kids are messed up and don't know right from wrong.

Santa Claus is a symbol of generosity and magnanimous spirit. Fantasy elements increase imagination and joy in the lives of children. At least they did in mine.
When I found out the absence of the reality of the physical Santa Claus...I was old enough to have learned that what Santa Claus represents is real.

Good question.
I tried to tell my son that Santa is just a fun game we play, and that the real reason for Christmas is to celebrate Jesus' birth on Earth. The atheists on here will love his response. He told me "But Mom, I SAW Santa at the Mall, but I've never seen Jesus". He was 4 at the time. :-)
I don't tell him Santa is watching or that gifts came from Santa, but we do play the game and get the requisite pictures of our son on Santa's lap.

Geez, y'all are a little uptight about a fat man with a long beard.
Its a good way to get kids to be good - something we can all agree with, can we not?
Its fun - who wouldn't like to think some jolly old guy came down the chimney to give us gifts?(wow, that sounds perverted... :-P)
It certainly ain't causing no harm - I used to believe in Santa, now I don't. I used to believe in God, I still do. There is a difference between them. Santa only really comes into play once a year, God is in it all year round. Don't worry about it so much.

Adults dump a lot of untrue things on kids today. They teach them how to put condoms on bananas, that it's ok to be homosexual, that if you are offended by the perversity you must be phobic, so on and so forth ad nauseum in the schools. Santa Claus should be the least of your worries.

Because they can't distinguish between reality and fantasy until they are older and have more experience with the physical world. They take most things quite literally.
I consider it a good lesson, personally. But then, I don't plan on lying to my kids. :-D

its not really OK at all...
no matter how many people say it is harmless it really isn't, because then all the children want is presents from Santa and then that turns out to be what Christmas is about to them, Santa giving presents.

Jesus is the reason for the season.
If you tell your children that there is a santa claus and they grow up and realize there is none, they may feel that there is no God too.
