Have him get a Cashier's Check in US funds (any Canadian bank will do it) made out to you.

I would certainly get certified funds, but you need to be aware that there will probably be an extended hold placed on the check due to the high dollar amount of it and because it is a foreign check. To make sure, you will want to talk to your bank to see what kind of payment they would suggest to help you receive your money the quickest.

If you are in the USA, I would ask for a bank wire for the 16,500 wired directly to your bank. That becomes a done deal! Anything else is a risk.
