I have used oatmeal as a subsutite for breadcrumbs. I like the taste of oatmeal better. You can put the oatmeal in a blender to make a finer meal if needed.

1 cup dry bread crumbs = 3 to 4 slices bread, torn and blended
Dried bread crumbs: Place a single layer of bread slices on a baking sheet; bake at 300F until completely dry and lightly browned. Cool completely before breaking into pieces and processing until fine in a blender or a food processor. If using a blender, process only 1 1/2 to 2 slices at a time. If you don’t have either of these appliances, put the dry bread slices in a heavyweight plastic bag, seal, then crush the slices with a rolling pin.
Bread crumb substitute: Many cereals can be crushed and used as a substitute—try corn, wheat or rice flakes, but stay away from those that are sweetened. Three cups flakes yield about 1 cup crumbs.
• Cracker crumbs may also be substituted for bread crumbs—use 3/4 cup cracker crumbs for each cup of bread crumbs called for in a recipe.

Depends on the recipe and what their feature is in it. They can be used as bulking agent, to help retain moisture, contribute to texture or even as a coating.
The dyed orange ones aren't great anyway... surely you have some bread or bread like product around. Although slightly stale bread is best for breadcrumbs fresh bread can be dried (put a slice or two out in a low oven for a few mins) then whiz them up... hey presto fresh, breadcrumbs.

I'm not a good cook but somehow these tricks may work on you. Its's really hard to gather cups of breadcrumbs because breadcrums are not meant gathering if we do not know its purpose. In like manner, we can not gather a cup of it by just merely buying a bread for a time LOL. Solution?!!! Try a pack of flakes or biscuit (sweetened or not) and turn it into crumbs. Grind it if you have to to make it finer. Please let me know what will happen. I did that in one of my Asian Menu and my Girlfriend likes it and eat a lot.

Well if you have about 24 hours before you have to prepare the recipe you can leave a few slices of bread out to get stale, then put them in a plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin.
