Because in the 10th century CE the Pope realized the Church was being bankrupted by all the wives and children of the bishops, cardinals, and priests. So he passed down a new Church law that priests and up could not be married from that point forward. The masses took this to mean that polygamy was frowned upon by God and thus the practice of persecuting those that practiced it begun.
In the Bible itself there is over 20 references promoting plural marriage and only 7 against it. God also rewarded men in the Bible by giving them more wives. So it would appear, that God is actually in favor of non-monogamy.

Jesus said to cling unto your wife. Not wives. He also said not to divorce.
This leads to one and only one sexual partner, after marriage.
