when using my PC I sometimes get messages asking me to "check my Browser". What is a "Browser" and where do I find the one I'm supposed to have on my PC so that I can check it? Oh and what are "cookies" and how can I enable or disable them?

A browser is a piece of software used for viewing webpages. Microsoft Windows comes with Internet Explorer, better alternatives include Firefox and Opera (both of which are free from http://www.getfirefox.com/ and http://www.opera.com/ respectively).

A cookie is a small piece of text that a website can ask your browser to remember and then send back each time it visits the site. This is used for such things as identifying who you are after you log in with a username and password. Cookies can be disabled for privacy reasons.

How you disable cookies depends on the browser, but they are enabled by default, so it is unlikely that they are disabled if you don't know how to turn them off. It is possible that a glitch in the website has caused it to think your browser has cookies disabled when, in fact, it hasn't. Switching browsers may resolve the issue.
