You don't have to have a degree to write. Sure it's beneficial if you've taken writing classes at college but it's not really mandatory. As long as you get your story published, who cares if you were a high school dropped out.

no, you do not have to have a formal education to be a writer. You can learn a lot about the art of writing by reading. not just the books designed to help you write like Stephen Kings book On Writing which I highly recommend, but by reading many different authors from the classics to the latest releases. Start taking the time to write down why you like a book and why you don't...and I don't mean content. Look at how the book is presented. How much information the author give you about the main character and when. How does the author describe a location or expression? Does the author show or tell you? Most great writers are great readers as well. Happy writing, happy reading! you can email me if you have more questions...I'm writing too!!

You don't need a formal education, but I reckon a willingness to learn is important. Homeschooling should give you that :)
Have a look out for writing courses, perhaps try entering into a short story competition, re-read the books that you enjoy and see if you can get more specific about what it is that you like, ask your family and friends if they know anyone who is a writer and take them out for a coffee if they are willing to talk with you a little about what it involves.
There's a great book i recommend to get started on your journey of writing - The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron. It's a 12 week course with exercises and contemplations to help you both access your creative spirit and also apply a bit of the discipline that is required to get something written. (It's available at www.growthbooks.com)

You don't need a formal education to be an author, as long as you follow standard practice for the language (Spelling etc.)
If you want to be published, try the net. Write a story and post it to a story site (These are usually found via the genre). In this manner, you get free feedback as well. Good practice for when you want to write a book. However, there are plenty of publisher who also put books onto the web:
www.baenbooks.com
being a good example.

It may help in the end but you don't have to have degree to write and I think it's the talent & creativity people wants than education. But it could help since you do learn loads from school and I think it's a good opportunity to gain more experience.
I say it's the talent, yeah. Are you trying to be a writer? Hope to see your books in stores one day if you are!
