Butter knife can do the job.

Or just smash the door, and buy a new one later.

Depends on what kind of lock is.If its a typical lock for an interior door than use something like a nail file.Just stick it in the slot and turn.If it uses a real key like the front door of your house its a little more involved Which is it?
Ok here's what you do.You're going to have to loosen the trim piece that the door closes against.Do this right where the door latches so you can get your knife behind it and get at the door latch.
Take a sharp knife first and cut the paint line about a foot up and down from the doorknob.
Now look carefully at the piece of wood and try to determine if it is nailed anywheres near the door knob. What you're going to do is carefully pry this piece of wood away from the door jamb just enough to slide your knife behind it a hit the latch.
Its a little tricky but once you get your knife to the latch just keep prying it and push gently on the door at the same time.

Picking a lock is very difficult, if you mean trying to use the butter knife to turn the keyhole.

The type of locking mechanism is very important in how easy it is to bypass. If the lock is a bolt, forget it. If it is one that just prevents the knob from retracting the little wedge-shaped piston thing (I cannot remember what it is called), you can use a credit card or stiff thin plastic to cause it to retract (sometimes you can). Helps to kind of wiggle the door while trying to push the card in. It really isn't that difficult and I have done it many times. THat is why this kind of lock isn't very secure.

As a last resort, I sometimes try other people's keys, I once got into someone elses house for them using my house key, believe it or not. THis is a very rare occurence but worth a try when all else fails.

on a lot of doors you can slip a butter knife in between the door and the frame and get down to where the latch is and slip the knife down and pry the little thing that holds the door shut so then you can open the door.

if you dont have a dead bolt lock i have found that a supermarket rewards card or a credit card also my student id card has worked i lost my keys and found this works well for slipping in between the door and the molding then wiggle the door gently back and forth while incerting the card under the latch and with any luck it should open easly also make sure the card is flexable to avoid breaking it

you can use a bobby pin and just put it in the lock hole and turn it until the door unlocks.
