Try some Patricia Cornwell. She writes murder mysteries.
The central character is called Kay Scarpetta, and she is the Chief Medical Examiner for the State of Virginia. The first book, Postmortem, introduces Kay in her new job. There are now about 12 books in this series.

Another author who hasn't written as much because she started later is Linda Fairstein. She used to run the Sex Crimes Unit in Manhattan, and she bases her books around real life experiences. Even bars and restaurants visited by her characters are Fairstein's actual favourite haunts, apparently.

Also, have you ever read PD James? She is very prolific and she's been writing a long time, so there are lots of her books around. She usually writes about Adam Dalgliesh, a fictional high-ranking cop from Scotland Yard who just happens to also write poetry.

Pick up an Agatha Christie novel. Murder on the Orient Express is great. If you can ever get your hands on it, Ira Levin's Deathtrap is my favorite mystery of all time.
