Is this a good idea or not?

I'm not asking whether or not you agree with abortion. All i am asking is whether a GP surgery is a good place to carry out an abortion

Yes it is. If a woman wants an abortion, then she should be given one in the safest possible environment for her including a GP surgery. (its only another medical procedure afterall).
Interestly the people that want women to have unwanted children who may in the future become abused and neglected due to a variety of reasons are the irresponsible ones. I think a woman that decides she does not want or cannot cope with being a mother is actually the responsible one.
What people are doing is moralising saying the woman should have not had sex outside marriage or that she should have taken adequate precautions etc, so they want the woman and the child punished for this.
There are many reasons why women become pregnant and then are not able to go through with the pregnancy. Let them and their GP decide what they want to do and everybody else get their nose out of their business.
Nobody cares about the child when its born,
abused and buggered in care homes run by various groups or abused in the home by various people when the woman cannot cope or adopted or fostered to quite unsuitable people. Get real people. Life is not "pat". Its not about life or death, it is talking about the quality of life another human being is likely to not have which aint going to be too "cosy" unlike some other people in this life. And I have read the question, but I also have read some of the answers Claire!

I'm not sure. Abortions are not nice, and regardless of anyone's views, people are going to have them anyway. But an abortion using this method before nine weeks would be far less horrific than one when the baby is older and has to be torn apart by a surgical instrument.

The only downfall is, because of the time limit, people will be rushed into making a decision they may really regret.

The only option is to do a trial run and see if the number of abortions increase given this choice.

Abortion is legal. Therefore any improvement on it is a good thing. I will not get into the moral debate of abortion because that is not what your question is about. Before surgical abortions were preformed they used medication to preform an abortion. The woman was given a dose of medication that made her go into a spontaneous abortion or premature labor. From the link that you posted it seems that they want to reintroduce medication as a way to preform abortions. They also want to make abortions more accessable to woman. As the law reads now an abortion can only be performed in a hospital in an NHS trust, primary care trust or foundation trust or in an approved independent sector place, such as a private clinic.
What they want to do is now make it available by your regular family doctor. I think that this will raise the comfort level of the woman seeking the procedure. To have it done by someone that they are familiar with and that knows their medical history. It will make the procedure less risky to the the woman.

The chemical abortion induces a miscarriage, so the termination itself will take place at home.
I would worry that if it's available at the GPs surgery, it could be used by some as a form of emergency contraception.

I don't think it should be done at the doctors surgery.
I think that if someone has to go through this process in the first place they should be given the privacy of a hospital with doctors and nurses they haven't known for years (as you would your doctor)
It shouldn't be a quick and easy decision to make and it sounds like that's the way it is starting to become for some people!

In a way yes it is. There are people who have abortions that don't live near a hospital and don't want people to be suspicious as to what they are going to do. On the other hand there is not a big medical staff there if something goes wrong, such as a hemorrhage and this could put women's lives at risk.

Not all abortions are carried out on people who have not bothered about contraception. There are many different reasons for having this procedure done.

Whether you agree or disagree with abortion, I think we can all agree that the decision to have one should never be taken lightly. By placing the procedure in a GP surgery, I believe we are minimising the importance of the decision. Abortion isn't a casual process; it is a life-changing one. And because of that, being able to pop in to see your GP for one seems very wrong to me.

It's for very early - up to 9 weeks I think - chemical abortions and I don't think it's a bad idea. If I was in the unenviable position of needing to abort an unwanted pregnancy I would rather go to my GP than go to a clinic or the hospital. However, I would NOT want to see an increase in the use of early abortions as "late contraception" for young girls!!!

Not a good idea at all!
The women will need the right support and a GP surgery will need to be fully equipped with the right trained staff. How can the NHS do that- its a big joke at the moment.
By the way- it will be too much for doctors. There was a survey showing that they felt very uncomfortable allowing women to go head with abortion. A doctor is trained to save and preserve life

I am amused by all the people that keep saying a woman should be able to do what she wants with her body. On that I agree. The problem I have is when a woman has an abortion it is not only her body that is involved, but the body of the unborn child. She is then imposing her "choice" on another person. Oh, and as far as all the "unwanted" pregnancies, medical science had made a wonderful new discovery. That's right, they have figured out what causes pregnancy, and many ways to prevent it.
